In July 2019, I received news no one expects: a Stage 4 lung cancer diagnosis and a prognosis of six months to three years to live. I was a healthy, engaged professional in a career I loved. Life changed overnight.
Today, I’m here because of innovation, research, and exceptional care at Sunnybrook Hospital’s Odette Cancer Centre. I am deeply grateful — and determined to help drive progress forward.
Lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer death worldwide. The five-year survival rate is just 22%-29%, depending mainly on the stage at diagnosis. Only one in four patients diagnosed today will be alive in five years. In Canada alone, the Canadian Cancer Society estimates that 19,400 people will die from lung cancer this year — more than breast, prostate, and colorectal cancers combined.
Despite this, lung cancer remains underfunded and stigmatized.
The reality is simple: anyone with lungs can get lung cancer. Increasingly, people in their 30s, 40s, and 50s are being diagnosed. This is why Crush It with Bev exists.

Corporate entities or individuals donate sponsorships. A corporate donor receives a business acknowledgement letter from the Sunnybrook Foundation, allowing them to write off the expense as business advertising. An individual donor receives a tax receipt from the Sunnybrook Foundation for the donated amount.
