In July 2019, I received news no one expects: a Stage 4 lung cancer diagnosis and a prognosis of six months to three years. I was a healthy, engaged professional in a career I loved. Life changed overnight.
Today, I am here because of innovation, research, and exceptional care at Sunnybrook Hospital’s Odette Cancer Centre. I am deeply grateful — and determined to help drive progress forward.
Lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer death worldwide. The five-year survival rate is just 22%. In Canada alone, the Canadian Cancer Society estimates that 19,400 people will die from lung cancer this year — more than breast, prostate, and colorectal cancers combined. Despite this, lung cancer remains underfunded and stigmatized. The reality is simple: anyone with lungs can get lung cancer. Increasingly, people in their 30s, 40s, and 50s are being diagnosed.
